2018 Macau Formula 3 Grand Prix Huge Crash

The 2018 FIA Formula 3 Macau Grand Prix was red flagged only 4 laps into the race due to  a massive crash at Lisboa Corner. Famed for its tight circuit and narrow corners, the Macau circuit is incredibly challenging for any driver that sets foot on it. Just minutes ago though, Sophia Flörsch's Van Amersfoort Racing car went flying at high speed through the catch fence at Lisboa corner.

11/18/18 12:04am PST: No word yet on the status of Sophia. For now the race remains red flagged. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Sophia and her team. We hope that everyone is alright and will be back racing as soon as possible.

11/18/18 12:26am PST: Unconfirmed reports from local Macau sources report that one driver, one track marshall, and one camera person have all been taken to the hospital. Unconfirmed reports from the team indicate that Sophia is ok. No current reports on the others who were potentially injured.

11/18/18 12:53am PST: The catch fencing at Lisboa has been repaired and the race has been restarted.

11/18/18 1:08am PST:Official statement from the FIA released. "A serious incident has occurred on lap 4 of the 2018 FIA F3 World Cup at Macau involving car #25 Sophia Flörsch (GER). Following evaluation by medical staff, the driver is conscious and has subsequently been taken to hospital for further evaluation."

11/18/18 1:21am PST: Dan Ticktum takes victory in Macau. Reports from track officials state that Sophia Flörsch, fellow driver Sho Tsuboi, two photographers, and one track marshall were all taken to the hospital for further evaluation. All were conscious.

11/18/18 10:07am PST: Sophia Flörsch tweeted out that she was indeed ok, but will have to undergo surgery.

The organizing committee’s chief medical officer Chan Wai-sin said Flörsch had symptoms of back pain. A medical report diagnosed her with a “spinal fracture” but said her vital signs were stable. Tsuboi was diagnosed with lumbar pain.

The medical reports said the marshal, Chan Cha-in, had a laceration of the face, an abrasion of the upper abdomen wall and a right maxillary bone fracture, but no neurological deficiency.

Japanese photographer Minami Hiroyuki had a concussion, the medical reports said, while local photographer Chan Weng-wang had upper abdomen pain caused by a liver laceration.
